How to Scan a Document to PDF (Phone, Mac, Windows — Free)

Scan any document to PDF using your phone camera, Mac or Windows — for free. No scanner hardware needed. Step-by-step guide.

You Do Not Need a Scanner

Modern phones produce camera photos sharp enough for document scanning. Built-in apps on iPhone, Android, Mac and Windows can turn a photo of a document into a clean, aligned PDF — for free.

Method 1: iPhone — Notes App (Best Mobile Scanner)

The Notes app on iPhone has an excellent built-in document scanner:

1. Open the Notes app

2. Create a new note

3. Tap the camera iconScan Documents

4. Hold your phone over the document — iOS auto-detects the edges and captures it

5. Adjust if needed, then tap Keep Scan

6. Scan all pages, then tap Save

7. Tap the scan in the note → tap the Share button → Save to Files

The result is a clean, perspective-corrected PDF. Multiple pages become one PDF automatically.

Method 2: Android — Google Drive (Free)

1. Open the Google Drive app

2. Tap the + button → Scan

3. Point your camera at the document

4. Tap the capture button

5. Add more pages if needed

6. Tap Save — it saves as a PDF to your Drive

Method 3: Mac — Continuity Camera

If you have an iPhone and a Mac, this is the most seamless method:

1. Open the Notes app on Mac (or TextEdit, Pages)

2. Click where you want the scan

3. Go to File → Insert from iPhone → Scan Documents

4. Your iPhone camera activates — scan the document

5. The scan appears directly in your Mac app

Method 4: Windows — Fax and Scan / Camera App

1. Open the Windows Camera app and take a photo of the document

2. Open the photo in Paint

3. Go to File → Print → Microsoft Print to PDF

4. Save as PDF

Or use a physical scanner with Windows Fax and Scan (built into Windows).

Method 5: Convert Photos to PDF with Breklo

If you already have photos of documents:

1. Go to Image to PDF on Breklo

2. Upload your document photos (JPG or PNG)

3. Arrange pages in order

4. Choose A4 mode for a standard document format

5. Download the PDF

After Scanning: Compress the Result

Phone scans at full resolution produce large PDFs. Compress the PDF before emailing to bring it under typical attachment limits.

Frequently asked questions

Can I scan a document to PDF with my phone?

Yes. iPhone uses the Notes app (camera icon → Scan Documents). Android uses the Google Drive app (+ button → Scan). Both produce clean, aligned PDF scans.

Does scanning with a phone produce good enough quality?

For everyday documents — contracts, receipts, forms, letters — phone scanning produces excellent quality. For technical drawings or fine print, a flatbed scanner produces better results.

Can I scan multiple pages into one PDF?

Yes. iPhone Notes and Google Drive both let you scan multiple pages in one session and save them as a single multi-page PDF.

How do I scan a document to PDF on Mac without a scanner?

If you have an iPhone, use Continuity Camera (File → Insert from iPhone → Scan Documents). Alternatively, photograph the document with your phone and convert using Breklo's Image to PDF tool.

Why is my scanned PDF so large?

Phone scans save at full camera resolution. After scanning, compress the PDF with Breklo's Compress PDF tool — use High mode for scanned documents, which can reduce size by 60–80%.

Can I scan a document to PDF on Windows without a scanner?

Yes. Photograph the document with your phone, transfer the photo to your PC, then convert it to PDF using Breklo's Image to PDF tool.
