How to Password Protect a PDF File (Free, No Software)

Add a password to any PDF file to prevent unauthorized access. Free online tool — no software installation, no signup required.

When Should You Password Protect a PDF?

Not every PDF needs a password, but some situations call for it:

  • Sending a contract, invoice or legal document by email
  • Sharing a confidential report with limited recipients
  • Protecting personal documents like tax returns or medical records
  • Preventing clients from editing or copying the content

A password ensures only people you share the password with can open the file.

How to Password Protect a PDF on Breklo

1. Go to Breklo's Password Protect PDF tool

2. Upload your PDF

3. Enter a password (minimum 4 characters — use a strong one)

4. Confirm the password

The password is never sent to any server. All encryption happens in your browser.

Choosing a Strong PDF Password

A strong password should:

  • Be at least 8 characters long
  • Include a mix of letters, numbers and symbols
  • Not be a word found in a dictionary
  • Be different from passwords you use elsewhere

Avoid obvious choices like "1234", "password" or the recipient's name.

What Does PDF Password Protection Restrict?

When you add a password with Breklo, the PDF:

  • Cannot be opened without the password
  • Cannot be edited or modified
  • Cannot have content copied from it
  • Can still be printed (printing permissions remain enabled)

How to Remove a PDF Password

If you need to remove a password you added, use a PDF password remover tool. You will need the original password to unlock it.

Password Protecting a PDF on Mac

On Mac, open the PDF in Preview, go to File → Export as PDF, check Encrypt, and enter a password. This works the same way as Breklo but requires macOS.

Password Protecting a PDF on Windows

Windows does not have a built-in PDF password tool. Use Breklo online — it is free and requires no installation.

Frequently asked questions

How strong is the PDF encryption Breklo uses?

Breklo uses 128-bit AES encryption, the standard for PDF security and sufficient for most business and personal use cases.

Can I remove the password later?

Yes, using a PDF password remover tool — you will need the original password to unlock it.

Is my PDF uploaded to a server when I add a password?

No. All encryption happens entirely in your browser. Your file and password never leave your device.

What is the minimum password length?

A minimum of 4 characters is required. We strongly recommend using at least 8 characters with a mix of letters, numbers and symbols.

Can the recipient open the PDF on any device?

Yes. Any standard PDF reader (Adobe Acrobat, Preview on Mac, Chrome, etc.) will prompt for the password and open the file correctly.

Does password protection prevent printing?

No. Printing is allowed by default. The password prevents opening, editing and copying content.
