How to Convert Word to PDF Free (Windows, Mac, Online)

Convert Word documents to PDF for free. Three methods that work on Windows, Mac and any device — no Adobe Acrobat needed.

Why Convert Word to PDF?

PDF is the universal document format. When you send a Word file, the layout can shift depending on which version of Word the recipient has — fonts may change, images may move, and formatting can break entirely.

Converting to PDF locks everything in place. The document looks identical on every device and every operating system. This is why job applications, contracts, invoices and official documents are always shared as PDF.

Method 1: Save as PDF in Microsoft Word (Windows and Mac)

If you have Word installed, this is the easiest method:

1. Open your document in Word

2. Go to File → Save As (or File → Export on Mac)

3. Choose PDF as the file format

4. Click Save

On Windows you can also use File → Print → Microsoft Print to PDF as an alternative.

This produces a high-quality PDF that preserves all formatting, fonts and images exactly.

Method 2: Google Docs (Free, No Software)

Google Docs is completely free and converts Word documents to PDF perfectly:

1. Go to drive.google.com and upload your Word file

2. Double-click to open it in Google Docs

3. Go to File → Download → PDF Document (.pdf)

4. The PDF downloads immediately

Works on any device with a browser. No Microsoft Office needed.

Method 3: LibreOffice (Free Desktop Software)

LibreOffice is a free and open-source alternative to Microsoft Office that handles Word files and exports perfect PDFs:

1. Download LibreOffice from libreoffice.org (free)

2. Open your Word document

3. Go to File → Export as PDF

4. Click Export

Tips for Best PDF Quality

  • Embed fonts — if your document uses custom fonts, make sure they are embedded in the PDF so they display correctly on other devices
  • Check images — high-resolution images in Word produce larger PDFs. Compress images in Word before exporting if file size matters
  • Review page breaks — Word sometimes handles page breaks differently in PDF export. Check the result before sending
  • After converting — if the PDF is large, run it through Compress PDF to reduce the file size before sharing
